Questions about Starlit

Starlit is an AI tutor for tonight's homework and studying. Math, English and language arts (reading and writing), science, and history and social studies. Grades 3 through 12, and college. Here are the straight answers.

What is Starlit?

Starlit is an AI tutor your student can open for homework and studying. Extra support when they need it. A stretch when they're ready. You tell it what your student needs to work on. It works only on academics and academic growth. It is meant to supplement the work of a teacher or tutor, not replace it. It was created by a veteran educator and academic coach. It's designed for ADHD and twice-exceptional learners, and it works for every student.

How does a tutoring session go?

They start with a short warmup on the same topic, then the checklist keeps the next step on the screen. A small check happens before the next step, and they can pause without that counting as a fail. You can send them in with a photo of tonight's page, or they can work from the topic you already set. The AI tutor guides the work instead of handing over a full answer key.

What if I'm not in the room?

They open a tutoring session when they're ready. You still get a short Friday note about the topic, one thing they did, and what to try next. If they hit a real wall, you hear sooner than Friday.

Does Starlit replace a tutor, an IEP, or medication?

No. Starlit supplements the work of a teacher or tutor. It doesn't replace it. It can work alongside a tutor, an IEP, or medication. It is not therapy and not a diagnostic.

What do I pay if I start now?

Your student can start as soon as you pay. $19/month for the first student for a limited time, then $29/month on that first seat. +$10/month for each additional student. A parent account holds up to 5 students. 7-day money-back on the first charge, then no refunds. The $19 price is a price, not a promise about grades.

What happens if I cancel?

You can cancel anytime, and they keep access through the period you already paid for. Cancel within 7 days of your first charge and that charge comes back in full. After day 7, there are no refunds.

Who manages a child's profile and data?

For a child under 13, you create the profile and you choose the subjects. We don't sell student data, and we don't use it to train AI. After you cancel, we delete student profiles and data in 14 days. That includes profiles, handles, chips, how-it-went digests, chat personal information, uploads, speech-to-text, and coach roster links.

What does Starlit collect?

We collect the parent or coach account, the student profile an adult sets, and enough from the tutoring session for a short summary. When allowed, an optional photo of schoolwork (Help with the page in front of them). We don't build ad profiles or sell student data. Coaches get summaries, not full chat transcripts. No face photos, ID, or meds. We don't use tutoring content to train AI models.

Does Starlit comply with COPPA?

Starlit complies with COPPA. For students under 13, a parent creates and manages the profile. We don't sell student data, and we don't use tutoring sessions to train AI models. Children under 13 cannot create their own accounts.

Do you show crisis hotlines to students?

No. If a tutoring session has to stop, the student sees “Let's pause here.” and an OK button. We do not counsel in the chat. You get a silent flag. The student is not told that you were notified.

How many students can I add?

A parent account holds up to 5 students. $19/month for the first student for a limited time, then $29/month on that first seat. +$10/month for each additional student. Each one has their own profile, so the subjects and the focus can be different. If you're a tutor or a coach, there's a separate door with up to 20 students and the same per-student math.

What do I actually see?

You see summaries and session details, not the full chat. Every other Friday you get a short note if you want it. If a tutoring session hits a wall, you hear about the step they stuck on, not a verdict about your student.

Can they use it for anything they want?

You set the subjects and the focus, and Starlit stays inside that lane. It won't turn into a general chat. If they wander off the topic, it points them back. A different subject means a new tutoring session on something you already allowed.

What if my learner is twice-exceptional?

The hard idea stays hard. The process gets a checklist, short instructions, and a visible next step. A strength in one subject doesn't erase a need in another. They don't have to hold the whole page at once.

How long can a tutoring session run?

You pick the longest it may run. The default is 20 minutes, and 60 is the most. They can always stop sooner, and when time is up it pauses instead of turning into a fail.

How is this different from ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini?

ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini will talk about almost anything, and they often hand over the finished answer. Starlit stays on the assignment. It will not talk about other topics. It gives one useful step, not the key, then checks that it landed.

What if they get stuck?

Getting stuck is part of the work. The AI tutor names the step that broke and gives one cue, then a worked example if they still need it. It doesn't pile on questions. If a tutoring session ends on a real wall, you hear sooner than Friday, and the note is about the step, not about your student.
